Browse the Murray Residents Directory

Search a Murray residents directory by starting with the kind of lead you have. A name can point to a voter status tool, a court index, a business filing, or a library collection. An address can connect a county parcel roll to a map, recorded document, and older deed trail. For family work, a local museum, archive, newspaper, or cemetery can add context that a current roll cannot show. The useful path is a short chain of official sources, with the right custodian used for each record.

How Murray Residents Are Found

A current search works best when the first source matches the question. The Salt Lake County Assessor can search an owner, address, or parcel number. The recorder ties a parcel to recorded documents and named parties. Utah voter tools can confirm status through an official channel, but only some fields are public. Courts add case and party history, while the library and museum help with older households. These are different records, not pages of one master list.

Start with the strongest fact in hand. If it is a street, identify the parcel before reading names. If it is a person, add an age range, middle initial, spouse, business, or past address before opening a court result. If it is a family story, move quickly to directories, obituaries, cemetery entries, and the Murray Museum. A record can suggest a link without proving that someone lives at an address today.

  1. Search the county parcel roll by owner, address, or parcel number.
  2. Check the Utah voter status and polling-location tool for a matching name.
  3. Use the recorder summary, then Data Services or the counter for deed details.
  4. Compare a directory year, newspaper item, cemetery record, or museum file.
  5. Request an existing missing record from the correct city, county, or state custodian.

The Murray Offices Behind Resident Records

Murray is in Salt Lake County, but it is not the county seat. That split matters. City-created records stay with Murray departments, county land and tax records stay with Salt Lake County, and statewide systems handle voter, vital, license, and court access. The Salt Lake County Recorder is at 2001 South State Street, Suite N1-600, Salt Lake City, Utah 84190, with RecorderQ@saltlakecounty.gov and (385) 468-8145, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For marriage licenses, use the Salt Lake County Clerk at 2001 South State Street, Suite S2-200, Salt Lake City, with (385) 468-7300. For local city records, the Murray Recorder is the right contact. Police and Fire records have separate routes. The municipal court is at 688 East Vine Street, with (801) 284-4280. These contacts give a searcher a real fallback when a web page shows only a department name.

Start With a Murray Parcel Search

The Salt Lake County Assessor is the clearest first stop for an address-led search. Its current form accepts owner, address, and parcel number. Owner names use last name and first name. The legacy advanced screen separates frontage number, direction, street name or number, and type or direction. It also allows a partial parcel search. At least three owner-name letters are required for a partial match, and the county warns that property data may be at least 24 hours old.

FieldWhat to enterWhat it can connect
OwnerLast name, first nameOwner card and parcel results
AddressStreet address selected from the listSitus parcel and map record
Parcel number00-00-000-000-0000 formatLegal description and property history
Frontage and streetNumber, direction, name, typeLegacy address combinations

A result may show the owner, situs address, parcel number, legal description, land and structure values, exemptions, and map links. A mailing address is a notice field, not proof of who sleeps at the property. Trusts, estates, and businesses can appear as owners. Treat the assessor as a parcel anchor, then corroborate a person through another record.

Move From Parcel to Recorded Deed

The recorder’s public property search gives a free summary after its terms notice is accepted. The address or parcel must be selected from an auto-populated list. A summary can show the active parcel, property address, current owner, legal description, document count, document number, recording date, and document type. Images and expanded chain functions move into Recorder Data Services.

Data Services advertises a $5, 24-hour login and paid data packages. Its tools cover owner of record, parcel-number history, legal descriptions, recorded documents, tract indexes, chain of title, subdivision maps, and plats. Other published charges include a $40 flat fee for ordinary records, with extra description fees, and plats at $50 per sheet plus $2 per lot or unit. Check the current schedule before ordering. For a past household, the county Archives is a useful lower-cost or appointment fallback.

Utah Voter Status, Carefully Checked

The official Utah voter status search is person-centered. It can help check registration status and polling information, but it is not a public roster with every private contact field. Utah voter data excludes full date of birth, Social Security number, driver or state ID, phone, email, and signature. At-risk voters can have personal information withheld from public, party, and candidate requests.

For a larger file, the Lieutenant Governor describes a request path with public fields, tab-delimited delivery, and a listed statewide price of $1,050. Salt Lake County Elections also accepts registration through mail, email, and in-person channels, with same-day registration rules described on its page. A voter match is useful evidence of a registration record. It is not a guarantee of present residence or parcel ownership.

What Murray Court Search Can Add

Utah Xchange searches district and justice court case summaries. Its guide lists jurisdiction, search type, case number, last name or company, first name, case type, search scope, birth date, citation number, citation location, and a date-range panel. Wildcards help catch middle initials, suffixes, and spelling variants. Narrow a common name by Salt Lake County, court, case type, citation, or date.

Murray’s former district-court data connected on July 27, 1998 and was merged into Salt Lake District Court in September 2002. West Jordan’s later coverage includes Murray data. Xchange may show case number, filing date, party name, party code, case type, history, and public documents. It returns no more than 500 results. Public electronic documents cost $1 where available. Older or converted files may be better handled at a courthouse terminal or through the clerk.

Murray Vital Records Have Time Gates

Utah vital records use different custodians and access rules. Birth and death certificates from 1905 forward are handled by the Office of Vital Records and Statistics, with eligible local access through Salt Lake County public-health offices. A birth record becomes public after 100 years. A death record becomes public after 50 years. Other vital records, including marriage and divorce records, become public after 75 years under Utah Code section 26B-8-125.

The County Clerk holds a full marriage license when the application was filed in Salt Lake County. A certified copy costs $5 plus $3 U.S. shipping, and another person’s recent copy requires a GRAMA request. County Vital Records offers limited marriage and divorce abstracts for 1978 through 2010. A full divorce decree comes from the district court. Recent certificates require ID and relationship or direct, tangible, legitimate interest, so a name search is not a shortcut around those limits.

Current Murray Resident Directories

Current sources do not all mean the same thing. The parcel roll points to owners, the voter system handles registration status, the recorder indexes named parties to documents, and city-created records stay with Murray departments. A public directory should label the keeper and the access route instead of blending these records into one list.

Use the source that matches the person or place question. A registered voter is not automatically an owner, and a city license file is not a current household list. The Murray resident lookup page lays out the one-person comparison.

Older Murray Names Need More Than One Roll

Utah death recording has a known gap. Before 1898, no government agency was required to record deaths. Counties took responsibility in 1898, and the Department of Health assumed statewide responsibility in 1905. A pre-registration Murray resident may appear first in a church register, cemetery record, newspaper, deed, tax roll, probate file, or family collection.

The Murray City Library at 166 East 5300 South offers catalog access, online resources, public computers, and library-card services. Its page does not establish a quantified city-directory run, so ask staff to confirm holdings. The Murray Museum at the historic Cahoon Mansion, 4872 South Poplar Street, holds more than 300 family biographies, yearbooks, scrapbooks, newspaper material, historic-home records, and more than 56 oral histories. Research inquiries go to Rowan Coates at rcoates@murray.utah.gov or (801) 264-2589.

Business Names Can Confirm a Person Link

Utah Commerce provides Business Entity Search, Registered Principal Search, DBA or assumed-name search, trademark, and UCC/CFS tools. A result may show an entity name, number, type, status, registration date, business address, registered agent, principals, and filings. A principal or DBA connection can explain why a name appears in a Murray newspaper, license file, or property record. It does not establish a private home address.

Murray moved current business-license applications, updates, renewals, payments, and status notices into EProcess360 on March 30, 2026. A public license register was not verified. For a local business question, check the state entity or DBA record first, then ask the city for an existing license file if the exact Murray location matters. DOPL’s free license search adds profession, license number, status, expiration, and discipline fields.

Why Murray’s History Changes the Search

Murray’s name changed from the South Cottonwood Post Office to Murray in 1883. A close 1902 incorporation vote was followed by county recognition on November 25, 1902 and state recognition of the third-class city on January 3, 1903. The railroad, smelter, State Street, trolley lines, Jordan River, and Big Cottonwood Creek shaped different address eras. A historical resident search should not assume that today’s city line or street label existed in the same form a century ago.

The smelter drew workers from Greece, Armenia, Yugoslavia, Italy, and Japan, alongside other Murray communities. A surname can change spelling across a directory, church register, cemetery entry, and newspaper. Try initials and alternate spellings. The population was 50,637 in the 2020 Census, with a July 1, 2025 estimate of 53,297. Those figures provide scale, not an individual directory.

County Archives Fill the Missing Years

Salt Lake County Archives lists online and appointment collections that include tax cards, tax ledgers, land-title certificates, deeds, plats, maps, case files, photographs, permits, and naturalization-related records. Its First County Ledger covers 1852 through 1856. Tax assessment rolls begin in 1853. Land-title certificates cover 1851 through 1895, with only part of the name index currently viewable online.

House-history appraisal cards are keyed to an address, not a person’s name. Cards can show owner, building class, year built, stories, additions, square feet, rooms, garage, appraisal date, and a footprint drawing. The county is continuing uploads for the 1970s through 1991. If the web layer stops, use the Archives appointment and phone route at (385) 468-0820. A record request should name the address, date range, and record type.

Use GRAMA for an Existing Record

Utah’s Government Records Access and Management Act, or GRAMA, is in Utah Code Title 63G, Chapter 2. Section 63G-2-201 opens public records while private, controlled, and protected classifications remain closed. Section 63G-2-204 calls for a response as soon as reasonably possible, ordinarily within 10 business days, or five business days for a qualifying public-benefit expedited request.

The Murray request route is for existing records, not an agency explanation. Give your name, contact information, a precise description, and the response format you want. City records, police records, and fire records have different custodians. Salt Lake County’s FAQ describes staff-time, copy, certification, and prepayment rules. Ask for a fee estimate when a request needs compiling or tailoring.

Privacy Is Part of the Record Trail

Public does not mean limitless. GRAMA classifications, sealed and expunged court files, juvenile material, the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, voter privacy rules, and Utah Safe at Home can block a name or address from ordinary view. Safe at Home gives qualifying survivors a substitute address and mail forwarding. Actual address, phone, voting precinct, and identifying location fields receive protection subject to statutory exceptions.

Lawful personal use. Use Murray records for family history, estate work, civic research, reconnecting, or checking a record that affects you. Do not use an address trail to stalk, harass, intimidate, or harm anyone. The custodian is the place to correct an error or ask about a protected record.

Murray Historical Resident Directories

Small record words change the result. A roll is a maintained list, such as an assessment or voter roll. An index is a pointer to a record, while an image is the document itself. A parcel is the county’s mapped property unit. A criss-cross directory is a historical reverse directory arranged by address rather than surname. The University of Utah’s 1910 Polk Salt Lake volume and Murray’s local history collections are useful places to see those terms in context.

Parcel
A mapped property unit with a parcel number and legal description.
Situs address
The physical location used for a parcel, permit, or map.
Mailing address
The address used to send notices, which may be somewhere else.
Legal description
The lot, block, plat, section, or other land description that anchors recorded documents.

Keep those keys in your notes. The state ZIP list labels 84107, 84123, and 84157 as Murray, but a postal label is not proof of Murray city limits. Verify a delivery ZIP through USPS and compare the parcel’s city field in county GIS.
